It is likely already an option in her settings (I.e., WPA).

Without encryption, anything she sends or receives over the link (bank info, passwords) coul;d be picked up by someone monitoring nearby. Which is also easy to do. Her PC itself may even be vulnerable to a hacker getting into it.

Read the instructions that came with your Wi-Fi device. Your device should be capable of 128 bit WPA. Without encryption, anyone with a Wi-Fi card can intrude on your network at the click of a mouse. Very dangerous in many ways!!

wat do u mean cheap encryption, its not like its something u buy n hav 2 pay for, when u set up the wifi netowrk in windows it will ask u if u want 2 hav the network encrypted or not i dont know all the details because iv never setup a wireless network myself just used existing ones but i know for a fact that encrypting ur network is already integrated with windows ie u DO NOT need 2 buy a program 2 do it for u.

If you are using wireless, your router should already have security tools. There should be WEP or WPA encryption and a hardware firewall. PC World magazine has a great article on setting up a wireless network, including instructions on how to setup security. Please read the following article:

your cable modem or dsl modem comes with an encryption code setting under wireless security, you can also disable the broadcast id this way noone can see the name of your wireless only you can see it and use it. you can also get a firewall for your pc
