I have been a pretty avid runner over the past 8 years, but as of a couple years ago I got out of it because of my knee. Every time I try to get back into it my knee bothers me and it becomes very disappointing and frustrating. I had an MRI done a couple years ago and was diagnosed with a torn meniscus and arthritis. Do you have any advice you could give me to help me get back into running shape?

Well the first thing would be to have the torn meniscus fixed. That will take surgery; go see your doctor for that. After surgery your doctor will most likely put you on physical therapy. Make sure that you do what you are supposed to do the that. You will want to bulid up your glu's and your inner thighs. This will help to build up the strengh in your knee. For my dear friend Mr. Art ( arthrititis) keep moving. When you move your knee you will keep the art broken down so that there will not be any shape points which will help with the pain. Take an OTC art pill. Talk to your doctor about Glucosamine. It helps with joints but some people can't take it because it makes them sick. Don't expect it to work right after taking the first pill. Glucosamine is something that you have to take for a little while before it starts to work your body has to build up a level of it first. Hope this helps. I have had knee problems for a long time so I know what you are going through.

Walk

Torn meniscus needs to be fixed by an orthopaedic surgeon. They would do an arthroscopy and smooth off the torn bit unless it was totally wrecked.

Arthritis - keep moving your knee
Lose weight
Pain relief

Orthopaedic surgery also to consider knee joint replacement.

Don't know if you should run after that though

Walk ... like I said

You probably require arthroscopic surgery (orthopedic surgeon) to clean up the meniscus, as well as proably chondoplasty to smooth up the cartilage surfaces. There are also joint injections that can be done to treat the arthritis.
