I think that it is acceptable in casual settings among friends, but has no place in the work environment or in social settings.

The history of every language around the world is slang of some other language. Soberto came from Italy which eventually became sorbet here in the US. That is just an example. I can go on & on so I won't....

Also, slang is alright depending on the enviornment it is used in. Now if you try to us it at a country club or a board meeting, you will most likely be frowned on. If you are out enjoying yourself with friends and family who know that is how you talk then it is alright. There is a time and a place for everything. As long as you know how and when to use it then you are okay. Now as for that answer that someone left saying that slang is just a person being lazy, then I guess he is lazy too because i am willing to bet if he/she did not try so hard to make that sentence perfect or if they typed more, you would of seen a slang word used in it.

I think slang is something that people use for casual conversations among friends, but you also have to remember that not all people know slang. I hate being left out in conversations when they only use slang, I believe it is better to use everyday English than just slang... you have no idea what is like to be asking what a slang word means in a conversation, you lose the bits and then get lost. And I do not think it sounds good or correctly in anybody specially a girl, it sounds uneducated and trashy at some point of the conversation, but just a point of view.

Slang is not a new thing - it has been evolving over the centuries and will no doubt carry on being the language of modern conversation for years to come. My students (I am ex teacher) took delight in having to translate 'their language' for me when I often looked blankly at them! It can be creative, humourous and spreads like wildfire once it gets going. I tried to make sure my students understood the concept of 'time and place' and 'who you are speaking to' so they confined their slang to appropriate use.

what do u consider slang? If you say that something is cool or awesome isn't that everyday vocab? or if u quote from a movie does that count? I think most people use slang to some extent. We aren't dictionaries. BTW, computer users have their own lingo. I thing it really depends on time/place, etc. Ciao!

It's ok to use slang in a conversation... not for the whole conversation... some people have difficulties understanding slang...

i think its perfectly acceptable in informal conversations. these days no one can actually do without slang coz all of us in some way or another use slang.

i think its the impact of music than anything else that has elevated the use of slang

Slang is conversational English. But in formal setting, correct form of the language expected. It reflects your education and breeding.

It depends what you mean by "slang". If you mean using new/borrowed words in a language such as "cludgie" or "bog" instead of toilet, then that is fair enough. Such slangs are often markers of different social groupings, such as rappers or chavs, or old linguistic groupings, such as scots or geordies.

If you mean simply mispronouncing words or dropping letters, then that is either laziness or poor diction. Either way, I prefer the first. Even though i often use both.
