okay this guy asked me out some time ago, I wasn't ready so I said no. I would like to try now. Should I hint at it? Let him know publicly that I would like to try? Then we could talk about it.

Forget all of the apologies and explanations. Why not just ask him what he's doing over the weekend and whether he would like to go see a moive, or something...

Honesty is the best Rx. You can hint at it, as : "you know some time ago, you wanted to go out with me but I wasn't quite ready yet ...? Do you still feel the same way ? Because, if you still want to, I would like to take you up on it, if it is not too late." And see how he responds.
Good Luck.

Don't go around it. Just tell him straight out, Most guys like for their partner to be a littel aggressive. If he already had an interest I'm sure he won't mind that you are now ready to get involved.

Tell him you made a mistake and that you would like to try going out. That should work.
