best thing to do is google the breed you are looking for plus breeders IE labrador breeder scranton, PA. then call and visit with the breeders and look at their grounds where the pups are whelped, cared for, house as adults, what do they provide for the puppies, do they have a litter now, can you touch or hold them, are they the kind of breeders that you feel good about.

You will find some online that are bogus or more like a puppy mill. What I look for in a breeder is a caring person looking out for the best for their puppies. Applications are a good cue for that. That the puppies are inside the house in the living area with the family, not caged all day all night. Are the adults kept in kennel runs? If the breeder talks of the pups they own as family as children you have hit the jackpot.

Don't use price to gauge quality. But do know that supper cheap comes with no promises. You can get a good cheap puppy, but it is not for sure. as is even a high priced breeder. Do your research and know the AKC registration colors for the breed you choose. Go in armed. ie: labs are yellow, chocolate, black but breeders are claiming they have a rare white or fox red(registered yellow), or silver (registered as chocolate), and slate or charcoal (registered as Black). They are ploys to get a higher price. But with labs silver, charcoal, slate can not be shown as they are diluted.

I used labs as that is what I am into and breed and hear so many BS stories when I contact other breeders looking for a pup to add to the family.

Living where you do, be very very very very VERY careful about a breeder of any dog. Rural PA is the puppy mill capital of the East Coast and all it takes for anyone to call themselves a "breeder" is the ability to put a dog and a ***** in the same room together and let nature take it's course. This doesn't mean they're a GOOD breeder.

How to tell if someone is a quality breeder of any dog breed:

-Low volume. No more than 2 litters "on the ground" at one time. Even that is pushing it.
-Health checks with paperwork available for you to review (eyes, hips, genetic testing of both sire and dam).
-Spay/Neuter contract for pet-quality pups (they will require you to alter any animal that is not show-quality)
-Return contract (they will insist that if for any reason you can not keep the dog, you return it to them, not give it away or take it to a shelter)
-Facility available for viewing at any time. They should have nothing to hide or be ashamed of.
-Intense interviewing of you. To a quality breeder, you are not purchasing a product but are being selected to care for a very special living being. It doesn't matter if you have all the money in the world, if they don't like you and think you wouldn't be good for their pup, they won't sell to you.
-Sire and dam should have titles in at least conformation, preferably with working titles too if it's a working breed. The breeder's wall should be full of ribbons and plaques earned by their dogs.

I hear that that area is the capital of puppy mill country, so the breeder you find may not be the kind of breeder you want..be careful...
( that was told to me by a vet student at Penn State)

go to http://www.akc.org/breederinfo/breeder_search.cfm to find the breeder of whatever breed you are looking for...those are breeders you can count on...

Honestly, sometimes the breeders in the classifieds on the AKC site are....well...less than the best. While AKC registration is a MINIMUM standard, not all AKC puppies or breeders are quality.

Better to go to the breed's parent club and get a referral from there.

Go to the AKC site www.akc.org find the listings for the breed clubs and kennel clubs in your state, contact them and they will be able to put you in touch with responsible breeders.

It depends on the type of dog that you are looking for.

Alternatively, you can also check with local rescue organizations or the humane society in your area.
