It's nobodies business but the child and the parent. This is CONFIDENTIAL medical information and NO law has been passed in the united states to make HIV infection information disclosure mandatory, other than for legal immigration purposes. People may THINK or feel that so and so has the right to know, or SHOULD know, but facts are that it really is nobody Else's business. What causes people to WANT to know is ignorance and fear. These two factors, more than anything propelled the whole Ryan White saga, where he was not allowed to go to school because people were ignorant and afraid. In this day and age, with the knowledge at hand, there should be no reason for this. Now, having said that.....yes, a school nurse asked to give medication if the person is on medication, should know WHY the medication is being give, but that is all. It's like this......I am a nurse, and we are to assume ALL patients are infected with HIV. This is because #1-if they ARE infected, it is their business, not anybody Else's, and in NO way does, or SHOULD affect their treatment, and #2 in all likelihood in this day and age, the number of people infected with the virus that we DON'T know about will FAR exceed those we do know about so if we are only care-full with those we KNOW about, you are taking a MUCH greater risk than if you just assume everyone has it (UNIVERSAL PRECAUTIONS).

I believe it's the child, the school nurse (who will be passing meds) and the principal. It is now thought to be more beneficial for key people in the school to be aware of an HIV status as this is becoming more common.

I was told just a few days ago from a friend who is going to school to be an elementary teacher that the only person that has to be told about HIV is a dentist. Non of the school staff has to be told.

The school nurse, the teacher and the principal. If the parents of the child want anyone else to know, they are the ones who can decide that.

Oddly, stupidly in my opinion it varies from school district to school district and state to state. The main concern seems to be the privacy of the student involved...understandable, bur still....

As for a school employee, teacher, staff member I am going to take a wild but reasonable guess that it is dictated by the TEACHER'S UNION. How nice. What ever happened to the child's welfare coming first.

And please, no evil, nasty e-mails from teacher union...the NEA. I had wonderful teacher, I was lucky. But times have changed.

The teacher needs to know before the child starts class. The administration needs to know before the child is enrolled. The nurse absolutely needs to know.

As far as the law goes, I'm not sure. I would think it would be important for the nurse to know and the child's teacher. That way if there is an accident, they would know to use gloves.

I feel everyone should know. If they are playing ball say and the one with aids starts to bleed the other children might get infected as well. This might be able to be prevented. I'd be pissed if children got aids that easily.........when no prevention was taken

Everyone in the school, you would not want an accident were the child got cut and the other people were exposed to it.
