People and animals do not have souls---they are souls, as these Scriptures will tell you:
Genesis 2:7: "And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul."
Leviticus 5:4: "Or if a soul swear, pronouncing with his lips to do evil, or to do good, whatsoever it be that a man shall pronounce with an oath, and it be hid from him; when he knoweth of it, then he shall be guilty in one of these."
Leviticus 7:20: "But the soul that eateth of the flesh of the sacrifice of peace offerings, that pertain unto the LORD, having his uncleanness upon him, even that soul shall be cut off from his people."
Ezekiel 18:20: "The soul that sinneth, it shall die."
Revelation 16:3: "And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea."
The Bible is very clear on what the soul is. It is a person, it can swear, it can eat, it dies(it is not immortal), and animals are souls.

I would like to believe that they do. Otherwise they become empty carcases that are here merely for our own pleasure, which doesn't make sense to me. The Bible often talks about how much God cares for the creation, I'd like to think that includes animals.

I'm not a Biblical literalist, so I tend to focus on the larger themes of the Bible (and I try to take each book on its own terms). The book of Revelation in several places speaks of God redeeming the whole creation, so it appears that animals, plants, etc., will exist in the new kingdom (at least as it is presented in Rev.).

On another note, the higher species of animals tend to display emotions, which would indicate that they have some sort of consciousness. I guess in the end I'd have to say no one can know for sure, but I do hope that animals have souls.

Humans are animals. If humans have souls, all animals have souls.

Of course they have souls. I will spend my eternity with my Shadow, I am sure of it. I can't wait to see what the fanatics write. The "Blessed Beast" guy thinks that babies go to hell. Ignorance is everywhere!!!!!
