My 15 month old son was acting really strange last Wed. when I picked him up after work. Grunting like he had to poop but doing it with every breath and he would start crying etc.. so I took him to the ER because I got so scared and his fever was 104 when we got there and they diagnosed him with an ear infection and nothing more, does that sound strange? I dont understand why he would grunt with and ear infection? do they just do strange things with a high fever, is 104 really high for a baby?

Children get fevers as high as 105. 104 and up are high for a child and should be checked out by a doctor. The grunt could have been a result of pain or it could have been Did they say anything about febrile seizures?? That is what it sounds like to me. What happens in this case is that the child's brain overloads because of the fever and it cause seizures. Many children have febrile seizures and never have another seizure. So I don't want to scare you. But honestly, that is what it sounds like to me. My 4 year has had febrile seizures before and there were no long term problems.
If it ever happens again put him in a cool bath or put a cool rag on the back of his neck. Or if it is really high put ice packs were all the major arteries are ie. under arms, in groin, back of neck. do this until you can get to a hospital. You can also give Advil and Tylenol. Example: Tylenol at 12, Advil at 3, Tylenol at 6 Advil at 9 etc. Check with your Doctor to see if aproves of this first though.

Also Children run higher fever then an adult. 104 is for a child. And dangerous for an adult.

104 is actually not that bad for a child that age if it gets much over that then you need to worry. That rule only applies until they are about 3 to 3 1/2 then 104 is very high. But he could have been grunting because that made his ear feel better. We live close to the mountains and I have known my girls when they were little to grunt trying to get their ears to pop. Perhaps that was his natural reaction also. Keep an eye on it and if he keeps it up or if he gets worse take him back.

The main thing about a fever you have to watch for is you don't want it to get too high. He could go into febrile seizures. 104 is high but sounds like you did the right thing by taking him to the ER. I've seen babies do strange things when they had ear infections, so I wouldn't be alarmed about it.

104 is high, but very common for young kids. Young kids tend to have higher fever than adults. Give him Tylenol every 4-6 hours to control the temperature. Keep him cool, wear light & breathable clothes. The antibiotics should kick in soon and drop the fever as well.

104 is very high for a toddler or anybody come to think of it... keep an eye on this. Ear infections can cause wicked fevers....did they prescribe antibiotics? If so make sure you give him accidopholis now...to put the good bacteria back into his body...the doctors never discuss the risks with antibiotics.... is he still grunting now? If so go to your family doctor and get this checked out.... good luck....when in doubt, check it out....a mother's instinct is always best...... I have 3 and its always worked for me... and boy have I spent time in hospitals, my daughter was born with a micro sized stomach...took the hospital 7 months to diagnose her..... I was at my wits end with stress..they just wouldnt listen...stand your ground as parent....and do what you know you have to do... good luck...

yes, 104 is really high for anyone, especially a baby -
maybe the grunting was just his way of dealing with the pain of the ear infection, if it was bothering him

I haven't yet had to experience that, my daughter hasn't yet had an ear infection that I'm aware of...

Yes, you can have fever dreams and halucinations with a high fever, its perfectly normal in children of any age.

A fever dream is when the child is awake and interacting with you, can answer questions and that sort of thing, but is having a dream while all that is happening. Or the child might scream for its mother, even though she is holding it, and act as though it doesnt reconize her.

I had them all the time as a kid. Theyre scarier than hell, more so for the parent than the child. Just keep him hydrated and in bed, and soothe him as best you can, it will pass as the fever comes down.
