Once the kittens are between 4-6 weeks, they will prolly get interested in what mom's eating from the bowl.. you can supplement the mothers milk with kitten food.. they will eventually go for the bowl as it is more filling in their tummies.. Let the mother wean them herself..the more time they can spend with the mother the better the temperment.

Kittens like to eat meat and canned kitten food is right for them. Use a good quality food. You can start feeding them from your fingers at four or five weeks. Usually they like the taste and will dig into the plate eagerly after that.
Save dry food for latter if you will use that when they are older. Meat is the natural food for a carnivore like the cat. It is much better for them because it has moisture in it.
If you soak dry food in milk or water it can develop bacteria much faster than the canned would.
If you are interested you can go to: www.littlebigcat.com and read Dr. Jean Hovfe's article, "Does Dry Food Clean the Teeth". Some of the other people who have posted here should read it too. This "misconception" has been floating around for at least ten years. Even veteriniarians are now coming to the conclusion that it doesn't clean teeth at all.

Cats have an instinct to use litter boxes. Normally with kittens you can put them in the litter box and let them sniff around. If your kitten doesn't use the litter box, keep doing this every day until the kitten becomes accustomed to the litter box. Normally before the kittens are 6 weeks old, the mother cat will lick the kitten's belly to force out the feces and she will then lick it up. But after about 6-8 weeks the kittens should use the litter box.
Kittens, like humans, benefit the most from their mother's milk until they are about 3-6 months old. Weaning them before this can lead to health problems later in life. The mother cat will know when it is time to wean her kittens and starting at about 3 months she'll kick them off from time to time. However, at about 6 weeks of age you can start supplementing the kittens' diet with dry cat food. Since their teeth are starting to come in or have just come in, it is best to pour a little bit of water onto the dry cat food to soften it up for the kittens to eat. At this age, dry cat food hurts their teeth and some cats will develop an aversion to dry cat food if it is introduced too early.

About five weeks, introduce it to different tastes - squooshy bits of human food - mashed potato, mashed veggie, teeny chicken soft bits. You'll see if they are ready and interested. Get Kitten dry food - and about 10-15 pieces at a time, put on a saucer with some water over it - it needs to stay an hour or two to soften. Try giving some from your finger to the kitty, and he'll figure it out from there. So, as soon as you start giving it any solid food, you have to start leaving out cat litter. The training is really easy, you just have to be consistent.

At about 4 weeks for the litter, make sure its small enough for them to get into and about 5-6 weeks for the food. I always started them off with can kitten food and added some milk or water to make it easier for them to eat.

You can introduce kitten food at 6 weeks of age. Mix dry kitten food with some water for a short time to make it easier for them to eat and digest.
They can start using a litter box any time after 4 weeks. Just make sure it's small enough for them to get into.

Cat litter - right away, let them learn that that's where they go to do their business
Kitten Food - they have different ones for different ages, just go into a store and read the labels. Do remember it's better to give them dry food though, it helps their teeth and it causes them to have better bowel movements as opposed to the watery, frequent kid that looks like diarrhea.
