Apparently, our prisons are overcrowded and under-funded. With some of our services now coming from abroad, would it be more economical to have prisons built and run in, say, eastern or central Europe, for the housing of British criminals? Would it mean less overcrowding and associated problems? Would it deter some crime? Would this help our economy and that of the other countries involved? This does not refer to permanent deportation, just serving a sentence in a different country.

This is a very good idea. Regarding close relatives they could bring the prisoner back to the UK for a few days each year so they can visit.

no because then how would the families of criminals visit them. though they do deserve to be in prison their families didnt do anything. ALso how would we control what goes on over there. Should we then send officals over to the other country to run them? How would thet be fare to prison guards that couldn't live in the U.S. with their families while working or should we have people in those countries run the prisons and not do it properlly. While on the subject wouldnt we be putting our prison in a third world country (because which first or second world country would take our criminals?). That increases the risks for corruption in the prisons. But over all are we secretly trying to say that if you disobey the law you cant live here? hmmmmm something to think about !( vote my answer best if you like it)

i think we have come along way as a society since the 1780,s and convicts were sent to Australia. If our Government did more discourage people from offending and did more to address breaking the pattern of re-offending, our prisons would be in a better state. In my eyes putting someone in prison because they stole to fund a drug habit doesn't solve the problem, as drugs are rife in prisons. To me there should be separate places for drug dependant offenders that can address their problems.
It would be nice to ship them off somewhere else but long term i dont think it would work.

Maybe if they employed more beat police we wouldn't need more prisons quite often the sight of a couple of patrolling coppers is enough to deter would be criminals.

Build prisons in India, Asia, Pakistan, Poland etc. as these countries must be practically empty now as our UK prisons are full of these foreigners.

first of all its a very good question.
second, why would any country want to house our scum, they may have enough of their own.
with all the human rights brigade looking over their shoulder, it would not be viable.
and no country owns the Antarctic.

better to put them on some remote uninhabited isle ,go back periodically to see how they are evolving.
