I am now on my third microwave in 2 years. Whenever I put microwave popcorn or tortilla chips in a paper bag (like from a restaurant) in my microwave it starts shooting sparks and flashes of light and sounds like it is going to explode. My new one that I bought last week hasn't started this behavior yet, but I'm sure it will. Any ideas?

I'm sure there is no metal- it is just a bag of microwave popcorn. Those are made specifically for the microwave. Perhaps the chips bags have some sort of metal content? but that wouldn't explain the corn.

There might be some conductive material in the bag that is short-circuiting your oven. Recycled paper bags are notorious for that.

Try putting the food on a plate and putting paper or a plastic wrap over it.

The sparking will destroy the magnetron (the most expensive part in a microwave oven) over time.

i have repaired various microwaves, yet have in no way considered what you've defined that did not contain a overseas merchandise. So my wager (sight unseen) is that the deflector plate is bent and touching someplace it shouldn't or a chunk of overseas metallic (foil) is up in there. If neither of those ideas artwork, pitch it if lower than $80 or have it serviced.

it happens only with bags?

some bags have a thin metal lining to keep the item fresh. this could be the root cause of the problem.

some tea cups and chinaware also have gilted edges, which are quite difficult to see actually, and these can cause sparking as well.

transfer the item into a microwave safe container and check if it happens inspite of that.

it shouldnt. if it does, you will be soon getting your 4th MW!!

You've mistakenly put a metalic object inside with the food.

Maybe you are using some sort of metalic plate to heat things. Sometimes the thing is broken.

Make sure what you put into your microwave has no metal.

Don't put any aluminium dishes into it, too.
Use pyrex and chinaware.
