I was just wondering. Seems like tips are not expected at the places people are paid the least- like McDonalds and the like. However, when I order to go from more expensive restaurants where they get paid more, some times they seem to expect it. Some times I do, some times I don't tip them. However, if I do eat at their restaurant, I'll always leave a good tip.

People at restaurants get paid $2.13 an hour in most restaurants. Sometimes the bar is an exception. People at restaurants get paid only what you tip them. the checks they get for their hourly wages are usually voided out or like 20 bucks for 2 weeks of working. People at fast food restaurants atleast get 5 bucks an hour. I tip the people at like sonic or places like that where they bring me my food, but at Mickey D's i don't.
I have been a waitress for 8 years (i am now doing other things too) and i know what it is like to wait on people and get a 5% tip. It sucks. Think about it this way, people are waiting on you hand and foot. Bringing your tea and soda your chips and salsa, you table is cleaned for you as are you r dishes, there isn't a kitchen to clean after wards and you order all your food made to order. you are paying that person to wait on you. The cost of the food doesn't include that. remember waiters and waitress' make only what people give us in tips. and even then a lot of times they have to share that with bus boys and fod runners and bartenders. On a normal night at Chili's i would go home with $40 after i tipped out all the people i had to tip out. That is for an 8 hour+ shift. that is less than minimum wage at 5.15 and my checks would be like 5 bucks for 2 weeks.

if you don't believe what i am telling you, then watch the movie "Waiting". it will give you insights on how you should treat the people waiting on you. remember most of us are single parents or college students just barely getting by.

If there's a tip jar and I have some spare change, I'll leave a tip. If I'm in a sit-down restaurant I'll leave a tip, generally 10% for crummy service and 20% or more for good service. 15% for average service.

The only time I tip on to go orders is if it's brought out to my car (like at Chili's, Applebees, etc..). Otherwise I don't tip because they didn't actually do anything deserving a tip except stand there and ring up my order. I do tip at Starbucks sometimes, but usually just a dollar or so..

Employees at "traditional" restaurants are primarily earning tips for their wage. Their "hourly" wage is much less then those that don't....even at McDonalds.

If they are taking time away from their other customers to serve you, then yes they deserve a tip also....especially if they provided good service with your to go order. Though you may decide to decrease the normal gratuity since the amount of service they provided is reduced.

For "to go" items, you usually don't have to tip but do so if you were given extra help and service. Tipping of course is "expected" when you dine in. I like to tip between 10% to 20% - depending on what kind of service I got.

The only to go place I leave a tip is at La Baguette. They all share tips and they make it fresh, so I have to wait and they put all kinds of good stuff in the bag. I leave one there, but that is the only place I've done it.

Yes, Because being a former waitress , I hated putting together a " To Go " meal without a tip....It waisted my time when I could have been working a table for a tip !!

I don't think a tip is neccessary because they didn't do any of the work, the cook did. If you sat down and ate that is one thing but if all they do is ring you up, no way. It seems like everywhere you go people are asking for tips.

If they're providing actual service -- bringing the food to my table, cleaning up the table afterwards instead of me having to pick up the stuff myself -- then they get a tip. If it's just some kid pushing a mop while I'm eating my Big Mac, no tip.

if i get curbside service, like Ruby Tuesdays or Applebees where they bring it out to the car then yes i tip. but if i call in the order then i don't. However, if i go in and sit at the bar and they offer me a soda or "something while i wait" then yes i tip about 3 bucks
