I think it's because we all get so caught up in our everyday lives that we fall back into the "someone else is taking care of it" trap. Tragedy galvanizes us, everyday life tends to anesthetize us. It's not true of everyone, lots of folks are out there every day working to help others and change the world. But you are right, most back away when it seems like things are back under control, even when they are not.

Well, I suppose we cannot do that now, as no one knows what tragedy youre speaking of.....
Besides, we humans tend to be very short memoried...we forget things that happened just a month ago. A recent survey found that 40% of Americans cant remember what year 9/11 occurred in (2001). Americans can name more dwarfs from Snow White than they can Supreme Court Justices...... With this being fact, can you understand how people just tend to go on with their lives after the shock of tragedy has worn off?
Hope that helps.

In my opinion when tragedy strikes not enough people come together , because they rely on the thought that other will do what needs to be done. Someone else will take care of it. They find comfort in telling themselves that which is sad. I am sure that has to do with the fact that complete strangers don't come together for no reason.

I think people can understand tragedy better than class distinction. For instance, anyone can say to themselves - "If a flood washed my house away I would need help - so I should help those people". We can imagine it happening to us.
Unfortunately most people can't imagine being born poor and disadvantaged. Most people look at someone unemployed and think it must be the unemployed person's fault. They can't imagine having no marketable skills. In that case a typical person thinks - "Get a job".
What's more, they can not imagine that anyone who has a job might need help. Here a typical person might think - "Jobs pay enough to live off of, jobs include medical benefits. That person has a job and doesn't need help"
That's my theory anyway.

Because with nothing acting as an impetus, people are happy to live there lives without seeing the need around them. But, when something serious happens, it is usually covered by the media, and therefore you have a wider net of people to catch the one's falling. And the squeaky wheel always gets the grease.

People forget. The scriptures are littered with people who have been blessed by God, do something great and noble and then a short time later forget that they (saw an angel, were blessed by defeating their enemy, etc) and do things that drive the Spirit of God away.
We can help one another now. We just have to remember who and whose we are, act like it, and step up and do what He would have us do.
To fall back on an old cliche, He never said it would be easy, just worth it.

I didn't do this for the 10 points, but I think I have the answer. Seeing people devastated in Tsunamis, hurricanes, etc makes us think about how fortunate we are to be "on dry land." Also, we think about how much we would appreciate a hand when we have seen our darkest day, so we feel the need to help the less fortunate.

That is a very good question... one of which I do not have an answer for. I do not understand why it takes a disaster for people to pull together... otherwise everyone kind of has the "survival of the fittest" mentality.
Sad.

That is a great question! And you're absolutely right. We should be there for each other through good times and bad. I'm like this to my friends, and i've recently learned that when you give and give, they like to take advantage. But, it will never change the person I am. God wants us to help others. You are so true with this question. Good job...God bless you =)
