I don't have this problem. But it is called an anxiety attack and you should see the doctor for it.

I don’t have problems being around large groups. However, I do have a problem with speaking in front of people (doesn’t matter if the group is large or small). I start stuttering and sweating. I tried communication classes where I spoke in front of the classes every class meeting and tapped my self speaking in front of people. Even though I passed the class, I still feel the same. The teacher says that I need more exposure with speaking in front of people. Maybe you should try attending something where there is a small group of people then work your way up. Try having a small dinner party where you are the host and then move your way up to going out to a famous club where there are lots of people. There are drugs you can use to prevent the muscles tighten and stabbing sensation in your chest. They make you feel clam and relaxed. Or you can try having a drink. But it’s always better to overcome your fears and anxiety with out any help from drugs and alcohol. That is what I am trying to do, over come my anxiety of speaking in public by speaking in public. The more you do it, the better you get. ;’)

The term agoraphobia has been widely misunderstood. Its literal definition suggests a fear of "open spaces". However, this is an incomplete and misleading view. Agoraphobics are not necessarily afraid of open spaces. Rather, they are afraid of having panicky feelings, wherever. these fearful feelings may occur. For many, they happen at home, in houses of worship, or in crowded supermarkets, places that are certainly not "open".

In fact, agoraphobia is a condition which develops when a person begins to avoid spaces or situations associated with anxiety. Typical "phobic situations" might include driving, shopping, crowded places, traveling, standing in line, being alone, meetings and social gatherings.

Agoraphobia arises; from an internal anxiety condition that has become so intense that the suffering individual fears going anywhere or doing anything where these feelings of panic have repeatedly occurred before. Once the panic attacks have started, these episodes become the ongoing stress, even when other more obvious pressures have diminished. This sets up a "feedback condition" which generally leads to increased numbers of panic attacks and, for some people, an increase in the situations or events which can produce panicky feelings. Others experience fearful feelings continuously, more a feeling of overall. discomfort, rather than panic.

A person may fear having anxiety attacks, "losing control", or embarrassing him/herself in such situations. Many people remain in a painful state of anxious anticipation because of these fears. Some become restricted or "housebound" while others function "normally" but with great difficulty, often attempting to hide their discomfort.

Agoraphobia, then, is both a severe anxiety condition and a phobia, as well as a pattern of avoidant behavior.

Sounds like you have social anxiety. Maybe when you get around a large group you feel like you are sufficating. Just tell yourself to relax, take deep breaths. Maybe you need to talk to a doctor about some medication to help with anxiety. I sing Karaoke alot and sometimes when I am on stage and everyone is looking at me I feel the same way. If it if severe for you , I would definitly talk to the doc about it.

Dude, I'm the same way. Its not that I have a fear of people, I just don't like being around people.
At one time I was diagnosed with a phobia called Social Anxiety Disorder, and tried meds, but it didn't work. I later learned that, well, some people are very social, others are not. I'm not a hermit or a recluse, I just don't care to be around people. I'd much rather be reading, writing, cooking, scuba diving and such. Luckily I have a wife just like me!

You are having a panic attack. Start by focusing on just one person in the group. If you start to feel the pains, walk around or away and get some air, breathe deeply and try not to focus on yourself but distract your concerns by thinking or talking to someone else and asking them questions that will take the pressure off of you. Keep doing this, it will get better...if it doesn't over time, then it's time to see the dr. Good luck
