My friend Penny has a problem with her weight. And its stops her from doing things she loves doing like swimming. She weights 145 pounds and is 12 years old and 5 feet 1inch. That might be a unhealthy weight for a child but to me she doesn't look that big. She looks between 125 - 130. Can someone please give me some ideas to help her loose weight. Shes tried to loose weight so many times and it never works out! I feel so awful because as her best friend I think I should beable to help her and I try but it never seems to work. PLEASE HELP!

Listen: you need to do 200 minutes of cardio a week. Remember fat does not turn into muscle, so you need to lose your fat while putting on muscle. The 45 minute thing is not true, but don't over 60 minutes at a time.

Do 5-10 minutes of cardio to warm up, then do your weight training. Do 30 to 60 minutes more of cardio, then go home.

The best time to eat is just after your workout within an hour when your metabolism is raging. For your muscles, incorporate some isolated soy protein or whey protein. Whey is more potent but the soy tastes better!

Don't look at your scale as the be all and end all, but get a measuring tape to check your progress, and that will show more tangible results.

Good luck and stick at it.

Oh honey, you are so sweet to help your friend! What a great buddy you are and it's very wise of you to try to help her! If she's overweight now then she'll probably continue to have this problem for the rest of her life and it will keep getting worse. What Penny needs is to learn how to eat properly and what foods are nutritious. That's a very common problem among girls your age right now. It's great that you're willing to seek out an answer!

Go to the website listed below. If you look in the upper right corner there is a place where you can list Penny's age, how much she weighs and how much activity she gets each day. It will tell you exactly what she should be eating and in what size portions. Help her to start eating properly and then help her get a little extra exercise. Even taking a walk for 30 minutes can make a big difference. If she changes the way she's eating and gets a little more exercise she'll lose weight.

You should try to go on a sensible diet with her. It's so much easier to diet with a partner than alone. Avoid fast food and cut out all forms for soda, even the "zero" and "diet" ones. I was amazed how much weight I lost after I stopped drinking soda. If you have the time and money, try the South Beach diet, it's not as harsh as Atkins. Or simply just eat more veggies and fruits and drink plenty of water. My friend is eating small meals/snacks every 2 hours. She says she stay full almost all day and doesn't pig out as aften. If all else fails, go to a dietitian. Try to go on a walk after school for 30-60min. Research shows a brisk walk is really beneficial. If you decided to go shopping, do a few laps around the mall.

There is no quick fix. She must burn more calories than she is eating in order to lose weight. To do that she must increase her exercise and decrease her portion sizes, eat healthy, drink lots of water, get lots of sleep. This has to be a life changing thing because diets don't work. (Once you eat normally again, you gain all the weight back, plus more.) Sorry but there is nothing that you can do to help, she has to do all of the work herself. You could invite her to go for brisk walks, and eventually you could start jogging together once you get your endurance up. Good luck.

she is young... tell her to clean up her diet. No sodas (even diet ones), avoid fast food joints. Let me give you a formula... if she eats 3 times a day thats will become 21 times a week... in order to reach her body goals she should be eating good food above 90% of times..

so that means she have to eat good food at least 18 times a week...

she must have parent at home... tell her to consult them and help her... I always suggest youngsters to ask for help.. like making her food, shopping for veg/fruits etc etc...

In my case I asked my GF to help me out.. she was really glad to help me with this. I m around 26 and lot more busy... so shopping is more pain for me.

Second thing... If she likes swimming.. tell her to go and swim.. swimming is darn good exercise in itself.
