Go either online to Timeout.com and click on NYC or pick up a copy when you arrive. It will list all events that are ongoing as well as new openings, theatres and restaurants. Go to the TKTS center in Times Square for cheap same day tickets to the shows. If you go before noon you can get them for half price but any later than that and they'll probably be sold out.

If you want to see a great show see "Avenue Q" everyone really loves it.... and you can still get tickets.
as for restaurants and bars- you should try the east village. theres a million and one- basically you can't take a step without finding something to your liking. Veselka on 9th Street and 2nd Ave. has awesome food.... Lucky Chengs is also really cool- its a asian infused restaurant where all the servers are drag queens- its drag dinner theater.
Theres so much to do and see! this New Yorker LOVES NY! let me know if you have questions!

You can go to nyc.gov (the official website for the City of New York) and scroll down the home page. There's usually a listing of what's going on in NYC, particularly on the weekends. Also try clicking on the "visitor" tab.

A reasonably hip New York friend of mine recently told me that she and most of the people she knows now use Time Out (New York) as their weekly listings guide. (These are people who probably used to use the The Village Voice). The website is here - http://www.timeout.com/newyork - and you can of course buy the magazine once you're in NYC. You can also buy it at some places in the UK, for example at Borders bookstores.
