DO NOT nail that window shut!
If you have a house fire the child may be trapped and can't get out...
I had the same problem. I put a security camera on the outside of the house aimed at the back windows.

Man what a surprise I got. Not only was the kid sneaking out, him and his buddys were haveing dope smoking parties in the back yard. Once while I was away for a day, they stole a car and put it in the back yard where the cops couldn't see it from the road.
After I installed a few more cameras I discovered stuff happening I really didn't want to know about.
6 months later I had a divorce too.

Better find out why your child is sneaking out. Nailing the window shut is not a good idea since your child would not be able to escape in case of a fire. Putting tape on would let u know he/she has snuck out but would do nothing to prevent it from happening. An alarm system is ok provided your kid isnt smart enough to disable it.

Try this: take a strand of your hair and glue it to both parts of the window with a fine bead of syrup while he's at school or out playing, then check it from time to time to see if it's broken.Or install window locks that only let the window up a few inches.Or plant some rose bushes out side this window, you'll know by the cuts if he going out the window.

Put tape on the outside without the child knowing. That way when the child does sneak out, the tape will rip off and can't be reattached from the inside after (s)he comes home.

Or you can get an alarm system.

Put a small piece of paper in an inconspicuous crack like along side the screen or if it's an inside window, where the window lock is. Make sure you line it up with something like the lock or align it to be even with something nearby (like marking a bottle). Look in the morning and see if it's in the same place. My mom used to do that with doors when she suspected me of getting out. I never did after the first time. The paper fell when I opened the door-- never heard it- never saw it.
Have a great day and hope this helps.

Get some sand from a home & garden center (about 3 bucks for a small bag) and spread it under the window. For good measure, put your 'mark' on it, something that is difficult to duplicate. Chances are your child won't even realize it's there.

Good luck and hats off for keeping your eye on your child!

rig it with a shotgun.....
or....

get a spy camera, put it in the room.Rig the window with an alarm that is under your pillow. When he leaves, close the window, lock it. Wait till he comes home, call the police and say someones breaking in my house. Then let the little fart sit overnite in jail.

Sigh. Yep, I've been there and it's a scary place. Two a.m., window open, screen gone, where's the kid?

Does your house have an alarm system? If not, is it expensive to get one installed? Often alarm systems will have a mode where if a window is opened, the alarm goes off. And, heh heh heh, it'll wake the dead when it does.

Find out when, or find out if. To found out if the child is sneaking out, you could just lean something small against the window. If that item has moved, then you know the child snuck out.
