Does the gum work? I'm looking for something that is kind of cheap.

Best and cheapest... You probably already have it in your kitchen... Baking Soda! But the taste is not the best although the results are! You can put a bit of toothpaste on your brush, dip it in a little baking soda and brush or if you would like quicker results, wet your brush and dip it in baking soda, you can always finish off with toothpaste to remove the taste.
Baking soda is a light abrasive and polishes your teeth. It's not only cheap but it is also safe, much safer than all those commercial witheners out there!

Stay away from the professional teeth whitening procedures and from the whitening at home kits. They are using extremely toxic chemicals that can cause IRREVERSIBLE DAMAGE TO TOOTH ENAMEL and premature tooth decay.

Most teeth whitening products use Baking Soda & Peroxide. So I would just use a little bit of both on a toothbrush. I've used both before. You just have to use the peroxide sparingly, but you can use the baking soda just like you use toothpaste.
