The Proverbs has the answer. "Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me: Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the Lord? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain." (Proverbs 30:8-9)

When we are rich, we trust in that, and not the Lord's provision. Those who lack, seek the Lord for their daily provision.

It is not money that is the root of all evil. It is the LOVE of money that is. (I Timothy 6:10)

People become less religious in wealth increase because they feel that they do not need help. They can pay for it. Or find a way to please them. Either by medicinal purposes, or for pure pleasure. Money can buy a lot of things, except happiness and peace, which is in religion.

One becomes more materialistic with more wealth. You become so obsessed about how well you are doing without thinking about the fact that no matter how much money you obtain, you lose it all and we all end up the same way in the end.

"I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." Mt 19:23-24
As people become wealthier, we attain more material things. We become attached to these materials things and we are prone to come to a point where we put these things above God and other people. Case in point: I lent a friend of mine a pen and then I asked for it back! Jesus tells us to lend (not give) expecting nothing in return, and I was so apparantly attached to a 35 cent pen, that I forgot that lesson and requested that she return it. Isn't that silly? It's just a pen--but it was a very humbling experience!
But, don't forget what that Jesus said right after what I quoted above: What is impossible for man, is possible for God. There are good people with wealth who continue to honor God. Case in point: Tom Monaghan of Domino's Pizza. You may agree or disagree as to how he spends his wealth, but you gotta give him credit that he means to honor God with it.

I don't think wealth makes them give up their religion. However, Many non religious people become wealthy because they use money to fill their void in their lives.

Because God is for the weak who need co-dependence and masters to guide their lives. Once a person receives an education or any kind-of mastery of their own world they no longer need to rely on some magical thinking.

Luke 16:13-15

13"No servant can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money."

14The Pharisees, who loved money, heard all this and were sneering at Jesus. 15He said to them, "You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of men, but God knows your hearts. What is highly valued among men is detestable in God's sight.

Please do not generalize it, as there are some people out there who are religious as much as they were before they became wealthy.

Some times it seams like some one became less religious once they become wealthy, the fact is they were never religious they were just acting to please god to acquire wealth.
