Prozac worked well for me at 20mg. If you try something like Effexor, I'd start with 37.5mg instead of the 75mg some doctors tend to prescribe at first.

Always have a back up plan, because you can build up an immunity to these drugs. That's why the dosage tends to creep up and up.

Lexapro seems to be a decent new anti-depressant with minimal side effects. My boyfriend is on that and I can't say it's interfered with his sexual abilities like a lot of them will. If anything, he lasts longer. Yay for me! hehe. OK, back to being serious....

I would set out to only try an anti-depressant for a six month to a year period and then wean off, just to see if you can. I know Effexor is harder to come off of than SSRI anti-depressants, so you may want to avoid that one. Good luck.

You need to take whatever is an EFFECTIVE and SAFE dose for you. If it is dosed too low, you may just be throwing your money away. If it is too high, you could experience adverse affects. It needs to be dosed by a doctor according to your specific situation and based on your response to it. There is no real category of low dose anti-depressants like there is with low-dose birth control or something. Each brand is a unique chemical that is produced in a range of doses based on response in clinical trials.

I have been on several over the past few years. I have had the best luck with Zoloft. It has been the most effective with the fewest side effects.

I know some people are against Zoloft along with many other meds. Regardless, it has improved my quality of life dramatically.

Try an over the counter supplement called SAM-e. Seems to help me some.
