I'm trying to decide how much extra travel time to allot for traffic. We are planning on driving up to NYC on the 15th and need to arrive right around 5pm on a Friday. What should I expect?

I'm coming from Maryland and it normally takes me about 5 hours to get to NY (not NYC) - how much extra time?

It sort of depends on how you are going to get into Manhattan - the Holland Tunnel, Lincoln, or GW Bridge. If you put your AM radio on to 1010 (WINS) they give traffic every 10 minutes so you can know which of the three above is the worst. That is assuming when you say NYC you mean Manhattan - most people do.

It also depends on the season. In Summer it isn't as bad as other times and nothing is as bad as the outgoing traffic on a Friday eve. Get through by the time rush hour begins for the lincoln tunnel as they close a lane coming into the city to help the outgoing traffic.

Of course you can avoid all of this by parking in New Jersey and taking the train into the city. It's quick and reliable.

I live in Maryland and my family lives in Brooklyn, so I make this trip pretty often. Normally it takes 5 hours. If you leave early (by 7) you will avoid a lot of traffic and unless there's an accident you shouldn't have any delay. In any case, you shouldn't leave any later than 9 in order to be absolutely sure that you get there by 5 with no stress.
Have a good trip!

WHERE YOU can get foulded up is the Tunnel entering Manhattan. One we drove all the way bacl from Florida with not traffic till the tunnel. Also, if you dont have an easy pass it may cause more delay

YOu are planning on arrive dirctly in rush hour and City traffic is always more in Friday. Have you considered the train?

GOOD LUCK

fridays are always bad when it comes to driving in the tristate area. give yourself plently of time. and dont get into the area between 3 and 7...people who leave work early are driving..and people who leave work at 5 are around. id say leave around 10 am. that way u will get there at 3...before people head out of work, and ull have 2 hrs to spare in case you do hit traffic.

and the traffics always worse in the summer. people going into NJ for the beach..and people going to the hamptons.

Traffic to NYC is always bad regardless when you go. I would give your self at least 3 hours. Just to be on the safe side.

HORRIBLE, either leave very early (5-6am) or very late (1-2am)
