Who will selects the candidates? Who will be the chief? How does one be selected from the Police Department ?

Let's say we are in LA, the city of vice. How is an LAPD chief be elected? Actually who has the most influential control of the operation of the whole department?

They are not elected, they are hired by the mayor, city manager or city council. They are an employee not an elected position.
They may hire from inside the deparment but often hire from outside.

Depends on what town you are in. Some towns the police chief is elected. Some they are appointed by the Mayor and approved by the city council. Some are hired by the City manager from their ranks or from out side.

Usually chiefs are hired by the mayor or the city council, depending on how your city/town runs. Sheriffs are elected/vote in by the people.

It all depends, sometimes the city counsel will appoint and then vote and other times the Sheriff has to run in an election and get voted in by the people.

Where I live, the Mayor appoints the Chief. Also, he or she doesn't have to be a police officer from the area they'll be Chief but have to have been one somewhere.
