yes, the return address is for the post office if the letter is undeliverable or goes astray.

I would. Just in case you inadvertently put the wrong address on the envelope, it would come back to you and you'd know to correct it. If you didn't have a return address on it, the P.O. would have not choice but to trash it. Then, you'd look tacky in the eyes of the intended. They'll think you never sent one.

I dont see why there would be anything wrong with putting your address on the back of the envelope, especially if there is a chance that it can't be delivered, atleast it can be returned to you by the postie. :)

Depending on the formality of the event.
If it is casual then its okay.
If you sent out printed envelopes, then use higher standards.

I always do handwritten ones, adding a personal note, it means you really appreciate the effort, time and money they spent on you.
