It is a measure of the size of the hole in the barrel (or, equivalently, the size of the ammunition used), similar to caliber.

This link has a chart with the conversions:

Not sure of the question but the "caliber" of a gun (as in .45 or .22) is telling you the diameter of the bore in inches. So, a .22 caliber rifle has a barrel with an inner diameter of .22 inches. It's a lot more confusing with a shotgun. They are measured in gauges, ie. 12 gauge, 20 gauge, etc. (a .410 shotgun is an exception-it's measured as a caliber) Shotgun gauge measurement has to do with the number of lead balls it takes to equal 1 lb., if the balls are the size of the bore. So, if a lead ball is 1/20 of a pound, then it would be the size of the bore of a 20 gauge shotgun.

It's the diameter of the barrel. For instance, a 357 Magnum has a barrel diameter of 0.357 inches.
For proper flight, the bullet needs to be a little larger than the bore to engage the rifling in the barrel.

Shotguns are classified by gauge instead of bore.

The caliber. In firearms, the caliber is the diameter of the inside of the barrel. In a rifled barrel the distance is measured between the lands.
