In the strictest sense its not illegal as there is no strict liability offence for driving without shoes.
However, you must be able to maintain the same level of control over the vehicle as would be expected from any other driver.
If you were not you could be charged with driving without due care and attention as well as reckless driving.
In short you are not committing an offence but you are tempting fate and creating a risk to others so for all our sakes put some shoes on. Ta

I noticed Kelli500 stated that it was illegial in the US, which is not true. It is the people like this who think they know law, who do not take the time to research, and gives poor advice. Many think in the state I am in that it is illigal, but nowhere in the state code does it say this. Aslo on our state practice driving exam the first question is this.

True or False - It is illegal to drive barefooted?

Answer - FALSE (It has never been illegal to drive barefooted)

Also to claim that is dangerous is insane. It is proven that people have better traction and pressure sensation barefooted than those wearing shoes.

For example - A person practicing Martial Arts, or Yoga, even some wrestlers.

So for those who believe that this is a law, then prove it. Provide a link to the U.S.C. that shows it is illegal.

Bear feet. Cute. LoL.

I drive with my BARE feet and people always say s*** about it. I guess it could be an offence but I have NO idea.

I mean, are they gonna stop you and say "In the name of god! Where the hell are your shoes? You're getting a ticket!" I mean, whats so bad about driving without shoes anyway?

I drive a standard and its so much easier. I CANNOT drive with flip-flops. And I wont. I will cause a huge wreck if I do.

So, I say the hell with it. I guess I'll find out if it is when a pig tells me something. LoL.

Be careful =)

Only if the bear makes a complaint!

It is deemed that you may not be in proper control of the vehicle as you may not be able to exert the sufficient and necessary pressure to the brake pedal in the event of an emergency.

It would be highly unlikely to get arrested. You would either get a bit of a talking to or possibly a ticket. Which you can refuse to pay and choose to attend court instead if you wish.

Not aware of a specific law but the Highway Code says you must ensure that "clothing and footwear do not prevent you using the controls in the correct manner". If you think your footwear might - even might - affect your ability to control the car - don't do it, there are more than enough idiots on the road, and you could potentially be hauled up for Dangerous Driving.

my brother went out to the off licence late at night a couple of years back and as it was only round the corner he didn't put his shoes on, on his way back he saw a man trying to rape a woman in an alleyway, being a martial arts instructor he jumped out and bashed the guy then waited for the police who arrested the guy. when he told the copper what happened he looked and said were you driving like that coz i could arrest you for driving in bare feet. so i guess the answer is yes it is illegal in britain.
true story it was in the papers and everything. it was only when the woman reminded the copper what my brother had done that he agreed to drop it.

lol first of all, bear is an animal...the word you're looking for is bare. Anyways, I don't know about in the UK but here in the US, driving with bare feet is illegal as a safety precaution.

As an animal lover I think killing a bear to drive in its feet is wrong.

It is illegal to drive with bare feet or without shoes in the US for safety reasons. Not sure about the UK, but it should not be allowed anywhere
