Ask someone that has lived in that area for a long time; a co-worker, an acquaintance. The phone book is not really a good source, because that will not give you any clue as far as their reputation. Another suggestion would be to call the local Humane Society or Shelter. They may have a favorite vet that they recommend.

If you are just wanting a random sample of responses, you could go to PetSmart in the K-Mart shopping plaza and ask some dog owners there (assuming based on the category). The store has some dog training classes, so the instructors might be able to give recommendations as well. This would probably be as good as any method if you are new in town.

There are many many types of vets out there. the ones that charge more for a quick in and out or a country vet that is more hands on and talks to the pet before any exam or shots are given. I have found that if you talk to people in pet stores or dog park is the best resource. We used to actually drive an hour to go to te best vet that was all about the pups, now we moved closer and still use them. Instead of looking for the best schools as we have no kids we found that we were about staying close enough to their doctors.

Try this site. Many of the very best hospitals are certified by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). They have to adhere to strict guidelines and inspections on a regular basis. This site should help you find a hospital in your area and tell you more about AAHA.
