Once an injury occurs fluid rushes to the site and cushions the injury until it heals. Taking anti inflammatory tabs would disperse the fluid and take some of the inflammation away. Painkillers will work on the pain alone but not the inflammation so a cocktail of both would be more beneficial. You can buy ibuprofen/paracetamol over the counter in one tablet, cant think of the name but if you ask they will help. Ice is used for swelling but always use a cloth underneath the ice pack in case you burn. Best of luck, and remember too many anti inflammatory tabs can harm the stomach drink plenty of milk when you take them.

An adult person can take UP to 2400mg of ibuprofen in one day safely for an extended amount of time. You need to make sure to drink plenty of water and stay on top of your pain. You can take 3-4 tablets every 4-6 hours as needed.
Another good way to help the pain is breathing deeply and relaxing, sometimes just doing that can help even more or can help after you take your dose.

800mg three times daily or 2400mg daily. Make sure that you take this with food or a glass of milk it can be hard on the stomach. Ibuprofen can act as a blood thinner also. You may notice more bruising than usual if you maintain a higher dose for an extenede peroid of time. If you are taking any blood thinners Coumadin, Heprin ect. ect. you should not be taking Ibuprofen.

Have you tried hot or cold packs. This may help alleviate some of the pain. Cold lasts a bit longer but don't apply directly to the skin use a towel between. Apply no longer than 15 minutes. You can alternate heat and cold also. Do whichever help the pain for you. You can also buy those pain patches at your local pharmacy. I think they are called Well Patches. they have one that sticks to the shoulder/ neck area. I have heard they work really well. Hope this helps.

800mg is the best to take and if ibuprofen doesn't work go back to your doctor and ask for something stronger like Demerol.
