I have a friend, whose wife's grandmother, is being cared for by a couple that are illegal. They are being paid cash and have asked to live with the grandmother for six months because the authorities are looking for them. My advice was to not get involved. Aren't they really cracking down with homeland security? I would like some wise professional legal advice to pass on to this family, before they get in trouble. They are trying to remain ignorant I believe, so that if something does happen they could plead ignorance. HELP!

you won't get too many wise answers on here as i asked this question too several weeks ago, mostly i got that i should be hung for even knowing an illegal or that i was a bigot for asking the question go figure...but here's what i did find out, i looked at the I.C.E and government immigration site too for answers and couldn't find anything so i asked a friend who has been a police officer for over 30 yrs...he said this: although it is an illegal act usually unless you are actually harboring an illegal(s) (which is sounds like this is the case) they will do nothing, but if you are then you are subject to arrest, jail time and fines. that doesn't mean they will do it just that you risk it. many people look at this as a immigration issue but its actually a criminal issue too, the people coming here are doing it illegally and endangering themselves and those around them. the problem with hiring people to care for the elderly or really in any other job is that there is no way to check their criminal backgrounds or get references from jobs or individuals...so you have no way of knowing who these people are or if they are honest or safe to leave the g-mother with. you can't go on just looks or impressions with anyone illegal or legal in a case where the elderly or children are being cared for by people you don't really know. personally, i would prefer to pay more and be able to do a background check and insure the safety of my g-mother than to take a chance. on a personal note: i had a friend whose roommate(illegal) seemed very nice, polite, etc and lived with him for almost a year before the cops caught up with him and arrested him for beating his illegal girlfriend almost to death, she was in the hospital for 3 months, when she got out the guy went after her again this time finishing what he started. the police now had not only a battery and murder charge but he had outstanding warrants in other states which all were violent in nature. they put the guy in jail and he bonded out and you guessed it he went back to mexico and left the family of the victim with no justice. equally as scary...when the cops searched the guys locked room at the house they found 2 shotguns, 3 hand guns...all illegal, drugs and fake i.d's. so my friend had been renting a room to what he thought was a nice guy and it turns out he's a violent thief and murderer. made my friend think twice about letting out a room to someone without being able to do a background on them. the most scary thing is this guy could easily come back and no one would know until he committed and got caught again.

every jurisdiction has a different view on this subject. You will have to check with local law enforcement to find out. Generally nothing if they don't know for SURE they are not legal. I wish they would all go home and come back through proper channels.

They can be severly fined, and even possibly given some jail time. Turn the illegals in to the authorities, then remove yourself from the situation.

Turn them in.Expecting criminals to not take advantage of this old woman is like expecting 2 dogs to not fight over a pork chop.
