If you are planning on giving money, then the rule of thumb is enough for the two of them to go out to eat, doesn't have to include alcohol. So around $50 or so for cash, more if you can afford it.

If you are buying a gift, spend what you feel comfortable with. Look at their registry, or if they don't have one ask their parents and attendants. As you look at each item ask yourself if you feel comfortable spending that much. Not just how it will affect your budget, but think about how you will feel about the money spent if they loose touch with you again. It shouldn't be something you would regret spending if you never saw them again.

first i would see if the bride and groom are registered at any bridal registries.if they are choose a gift from the list that is affordable.if thy are not then a $50 gift is fine.if you are going in on a gift with someone then the gift should be no less the $100. and may i suggest a gift card as a gift (visa,am exp,mastercard ect...) this way the bride and groom can get what they need and want.
