A lot of supermarkets are doing this now. Kroger, Marsh, Giant Eagle, and Big Bear are the ones I know of, and I'm sure there are many more. Their philosophy is to jack up every price in the store, then give you a discount on some of them (if you remember to bring your card), and act like they're doing you a favor. I HATE them. The only reason I still go to those stores is because they're nicer and more convenient than supercenters like Wal-Mart and Meijer. But my grocery bill at those supercenters is always lower than the regular supermarkets, even without a stupid card. Imagine that.

One cannot always believe everything one reads on the Internet. But, I just read that these store cards are being used by some companies to build a purchase profile on you. In other words, more big brother nonsense.

Some years ago, I worked with a very funny fellow. He said that it had been reported by many cities that at commercial time on network channels, the city could tell by the rapid drain of water that everyone was running to the bathroom.

He said that the grocery saver cards were tracking what people bought. He said it was bad enough someone could tell when he was pooping, without also being able to tell what he ate to make the poop. So, he refused to use those cards, and considered them a violation of his privacy.

It's unfortunate that stores do that, but it's everywhere. They jack things up then put it on "sale" when we all know it's not on sale. That's how they get you in the store to buy other things that are not a savings. I'm a bargain hunter, I look at all the adds and then decide what store will get my business for the week. Most of the time it's Meijer, but once in a while Wal-Mart or Kroger will get my business. Buyer beware...Right?

The cards are to track what shoppers buy. It is not to gather information on individual shoppers, but is used to determine necessary stock levels, shopping trends, which products sell better and even which sale products will attract more buyers. I don't care for it either. I think a "sale" item should be the same price regardless of if you use a their card or not. Like it or not though, shopper cards are here to stay.

Is there a Safeway near you? You don't even need to remember your card, you can just enter your phone number. I have no clue where my card is but I still save 20-25% on average. You just have to look for deals and buy store brands, which aren't any different from the big name brands.

They do this at Brookshires too and it drives me nuts! That's why I shop at super walmart. I have to drive to shop anyway, so I might as well go somewhere I like.

I don't like them. Sometimes my husband will get them and everytime they ask me I say politey,"thank you, no." If it's not on sale, I don't generally buy it.
