I have seen photo's of dogs stuck together from the breeding process and I've also heard stories. Is it best to just let them be and seperate on their on, or should you intervene and attempt to get them apart. Someone suggested that pouring cold water over the male would help to ease them apart. What do you do in this situation?

I think the kindest thing to do would be to let them work it out on their own. It seems like any kind of intervention would only have the possibility of injuring them.

Breeding Tie

Good Lord, some of the answers I read, where do people get these ideas????
By the time they lock, if preventing pregnancy was ever an issue...it is not now.
NEVER try to "help" dogs separate during a lock.
The female and the male can be damaged, the crap about the water hose is a bunch of nonsense, the muscles will relax and release the male in their own good time.
A lock will last from 10 to 45 minutes. It is different with every dog.
And while I disagree with all the screaming to spay and neuter every dog that walks, there are definitely cases where it is the best recourse.
If the dogs are advanced to the locking stage, there is nothing that can be done except wait for about 60 days to have a bunch of puppies that will probably be unloved and starve or be put to death.
What a waste of Gods little wonders.

The "stuck together" thing is called a "tie". In common verbiage, this is when the female's vagina clamps down on the male's organ to keep him in place while sperm is being transfered. NEVER try to break a tie by dumping water on the dogs or trying to pull them away from one another. Doing so can prolong the tie and/or cause severe damage to both dogs. The tie will only end when the female's muscles relax and she releases the male. Usually, ties end within a minute or so, but interference can cause them to last longer.

This world makes me sick. I spend HOURS every week on the phone, on the computer, going through files, an endless list of things---working in animal rescue. I have seven dogs in my house right now. Four are my own. Three are fosters for this rescue. It is NOT easy. I haven't relaxed in a long time, because of pathetic, irresponsible people like yourself. This is a horrible situation. Have you ever been in an animal shelter? Or stuck your head in a clogged toilet? The feeling is about the same. It SUCKS. Hundreds of thousands of homeless pets die every day. And now they have you to add to their list of people to thank.

the sticking together with his penis in the female is called a tie and NO you do NOT want to pull them apart. The male has barbs at the end of his penis that catch inside the female to hold the tie. If you rip them apart you will hurt both the male and the female. DO NOT TOUCH THEM let them be and he will come apart on his own anywhere from minutes to even a half hour after the tie started.

If you don't know you shouldn't be breeding dogs. When they are stuck together that's called a tie and breeders want a tie because it virtually ensures pregnancy. If you try to pull them apart you will tear the bitches vagina and harm the dogs penis. There is nothing you can do to pull them apart, nature has to take it's coarse.
Don't try to breed your dogs, leave it to the professionals.

well once they are together you should never pull them apart because that will hurt the female as well as the male. now if you do not want the breeding then you can get a little cold water and slowly pour it over the male and he will separate from the female. but if you want the breeding then you need to leave them alone but watch them so nothing will happen, they will separate on their own and they will probably try again later to tie together.

It's true that you should let them be and let them seperate on their own. II'll them along if I were you.

It is normal that dogs get stuck when they mate. Forcing them to seperate will only result in great pain, injury or in rare cases death for these dogs due to excessive bleeding/infection to their rep. organs.

The reason why dogs 'locked' up while mating is that this is the only time the male dog can deposit all his sp**m to the female dog.

Don't you know that other dogs can tell if your dog (female) is ready to mate? Female dogs secretes light red liquid from their rep. organs when they are ready to mate. The scent from this secretion is actually odourless for humans but for male dogs, it drives them crazy - Male dogs can even smell it from afar.

Assuming that your dog is a female (and she's ready for mating). If you go out to walk your dog. She'll immediately run towards any dog she sees, wagging her tail while smelling the other dog and finally 'wiggle' her 'thing' to the other dogs face....

Don't worry. They might look hurt in the process but they really aren't...

Let them do whatever they would do in nature. What is happening is totally natural. For many species it is natural for the penis to swell much bigger once inside so it gets stuck. This gives a higher chance of fertilization.
