the first problem is it seems you have a copied xp home, this is because you are only using service pack 1,and by now the service pack 2 update should have installed itself
if you have a genuine windows xp,you must get sp2,allthough this isnt needed for vista,it will keep you safer at the moment
your processor is fine, anything above 800mhz,which is around pentium 3/amd k6 processor speed, and your ram is just smack on 512mb but if you can get more memory this will help the vista experience run more smoothly
120 gb hdd is fine, allow up to 10gb for vista and all upcoming updates, and all plug-ins
remember to have a good graphic card aswell,to get the full aero-frame effect a card with pixel and shader model 2.0 and above is required, although i have run the vista beta with a radeon 9250,which is pixel/shader model 1.0 and it ran ok but you can buy a card with 2.0(ge-force fx5500) for £45($90) which is the same price as the radeon
if you are buying a new p.c allways check a case sticker to see if its "vista enabled"
good luck

512 MB RAM is your biggest drawback for Vista. That is their minimum recommended amount. Although, even 1.7 GHz P4 is getting a bit behind the times. 120 GB hard drive should still be good.

I doubt it - it's a resource hog, it's not out, and even if you could I wouldn't suggest it.

Vista has what geeks call a "virgin stack" it means that all the updates that have been issued over the last 16 years? Wiped off the board aka they're starting over and have to find all the glitches again.

If you insist on having Vista at some point... wait a year and a half so they will have at least some of the glitches patched.

Yes you need a decent graphics card to get the most out Areo which is the interface. I think Microsoft recommend at least 128 mb of ram on the video card.
