Oral surgeons do not do root canals, their specialty is extracting teeth and any other surgical procedure. Endodontists are trained for 2-3 extra years to do nothing but root canals, and only that in private practice. Most general dentists do root canals, as long as they are simple and uncomplicated. I do most root canals in my office, and those teeth with more difficult anatomy are referred to the endodontist.
Root canals have come a long way from our parents' generation, and so are the equipment and instruments involved. They are quite easy to do now which is why many general dentists can and will do them. Your dentist should have given you a mild pain medication and/or antibiotics if you are still having pain prior to the appointment. If not, take 800 mg if ibuprofen an hour before the appointment. You will be numb during the procedure so you should not feel anything. After the appointment, antibiotics (if still needed) as well as ibuprofen, is all you need. You might be sore for a day, but nothing that OTC cannot handle.
Good luck!

To perform a root canal the mouth is well numbed by novocaine or one of that family of drugs. During the root canal the nerves are removed from the tooth and the result is the tooth no longer produces pain since that pain pathway has been removed. For a few days afterward though you may have a sore jaw from the work done inside the mouth and Tylenol or ibuprofen will take care of that. It never ceases to amaze me the number of medical procedures that people on here claim to be having that they are absolutely clueless about. Any concerns or questions should have been addressed to the surgeon or dentist performing the root canal. Generally speaking an oral surgeon is better suited to doing a root canal than a dentist is even though lots of dentist do them.

I even have had 2 root canals contained in the previous 4 months. I take an 800mg Motrin in the previous i am going in and a million while that's over. I take a third one that evening in the previous mattress and awaken day after on the instant wonderful. rather, there is not any longer to lots soreness after the numbness wears off. yet, the Motrin assists in protecting the swelling of the gums down. as long as your dentist is delicate jointly as doing the technique, your soreness would be minimum. FYI the technique purely lasts approximately an hour, from the time you get the shot to the time you're using away.

Take some over the counter pain killers first just to deaden your pain perception. Stop taking aspirin because it encourages bleeding. Dentist who does extraction usually gives you a printed sheet that answers all medicine questions (as well as info about cold packs and rinsing with salt water). If you don't get a paper just ask them the questions. Root canals have a bad reputation but are not really scary since you are under an injection pain killer before they start.

Most of the times there's little if any pain, and besides, your dentist should make the recommendation, not Yahoo Answers.

My father's a dentist, and what he usually advises/prescribes for people is a nice, strong pain killer (sometimes percocet or lortab), as well as an antibiotic.
