My bassett hound is one year old. She is an inside pet. While her bowel movements have been more excessive recently she has only had the above mentioned symptoms 2 out of the past 10 BM's. She has a bad habit of eating crickets and other small bugs. I am unsure if this may be causing her symptoms.

She may have an intestinal upset caused by dietary indiscretions or by a bacteria. She could also have an intestinal parasite. First step is to drop a stool sample off at the vets office. Have them check it for intestinal parasites. If they find any, they will give the correct medication. If the fecal is negative for parasites and the problem continues, make an appointment with the vet for an exam. If your bassett adds vomiting to the bloody stools and/or the stools have a tarry look to them, it's now more of an emergency.

Blood and mucus in the stool can be caused by a variety of things: a severe worm infestation, coccidia, giardia, colitis, Parvo, HGE... and none of them are good. Restrict the dog's diet for a day (the less that goes in, the less there will be that comes out), and get your dog to a vet IMMEDIATELY. Take a sample of its poop with you so your vet can do a "fecal float" exam and find out exactly what's causing the problem. Most bowel problems can be corrected within a few days with medication.

While you're dog is recovering, give it a bland diet of boiled rice and hamburger for a few days, then slowly start mixing in its normal food and reducing the rice mixture. The rice will fill the dog up without upsetting its stomach, and will help to calm down its aggravated bowel.

if it has an aweful smell to the diarehhia and their is mucus in it with or with out blood, with some vomiting and the dog is lethargic(laying around not eating or drinking) it is most likely parvo, Go to the vet immediately.. We have a pup at vets now with parvo on iv's since monday and we dont know if he will make it or not... Good luck.. Also if it is parvo it is very contagious to other dogs and spreads from contact and on bowls, etc. Good Luck!!!

again take her to the vet and bring in a stool sample so they can test it for a number of things. May be nothing but it could also be something major going on inside her intestines or even her tummy.

This could be a very serious problem, I raise/breed dogs and know. This could be from the dog chewing a bone and it cutting her stomach linning, worms, parvo, or distemper. You def. need to take it to the vet ASAP.
