It is not the most expensive city in the world but the more expensive cities like London and Tokyo have far so many more hotels within the $100-250/night range.

Why do cities such as London or Tokyo (which are rated by certain institutions are the "most expensive " cities in the world, far more expensive than New York) have much cheaper rooms for the aforementioned prices?

You are talking about the Manhattan section of NYC, not NYC. The rates in Manhattan are very high, because it is a very small area, with very high property values, and very high demand. The costs of a hotel in Manhattan are close to the same in the best areas of London, or Tokyo. If you want a lower cost hotel, then you need to book in the outskirts, or in NJ.

it is because of the city and the place the hotels are at. It is all location location location. In London the hotels are more out of the center of the city and like Tokyo it is also like London but also the change rate might come into play at some point.

Usually, I stay in NJ for $99 a night when I visit NYC.
The law of supply and demand - lots of people visit NYC (many of them with deep pockets) and a small supply of hotel rooms results in outlandish prices.
Through expedia, I did pay $199 per night to stay across from Carnegie Hall. There are deals out there so shop around.

Try staying at a hostel. You can get one in NYC for $20-40 per night and some include community kitchens - so you can cook some of your own meals. Check www.hostel.com. I recommend Chelsea.

here's a special on NYC hotels.
You are just not looking the right places I think if you are finding hotels which average $350-$450 a night. That is absurd.

Some people are willing to pay for convenience and a view. You could always stay up the Hudson (Terrytown is beautiful) and take the train to Grand Central.

Taxes. NYC taxes are very high. Also, the cost of help in NYC is high because the cost of living is so high.
