Not sure what message it sends the kids but the message it sends to parents should be that they need to be with them more and doing homework with them.

OK think of it like this. The problem is not with the catagory, the problem is with the answers. Answers in this catagory should never supply the solution to the homework but it could supply infomration about how to find the solution. There is nothing bad about that and could be seen as a useful resource. Someone else in the world may be able to explain how to get to the solution in a different way that makes more sense to the person asking the question.
The problem is that too many people just supply the answer. I do answer these questions but never with the solution and just supply information as to how to come to the solution on their own.

Homework help sends the message that there are people out in the world who are willing to help someone they don't know. If done properly, it can be a good tool, particularly when a young person feels they have run out of options. Of course a student can use this forum to "cheat," but most good things have a down side; it doesn't mean that you throw away the good aspects of something to eliminate the bad ones. In my opinion, the most important safeguard to ensure that a student uses this tool to his or her true advantage is an involved parent!

It is perfectly fine to have a homework help section as long as it is for .. ehem.. homework help.
What is not good is if kids abuse this section and make it into a "do my homework" section.
Not all kids have parents, siblings or friends who have the time or the initiative to actually help them our with homework, so it could widen their reach, but kids need to understand that not everything on the internet is well based facts.
Besides, it is up to each kid to decide whether of not to use this section at all.
Here we go again, it is all about freedom of choice vs authoritarianism isn't it?

How can you be against homework help, homework is so kids can LEARN how to do the work, not be a TEST ... Many kids struggle these days because parents are off working and no one is at home to help them when they get stuck ... it's a perfectly fine program to have ... I think you should be more concerned with what is being taught in schools today then about kids actually "Applying" themselves to get help and do good in school.

Many public libraries have homework help sections.
Someone at yahoo decided to add this feature to Answers.
I think answering questions is a judgment call. No one may want to answer 1+1, but could provide a jump start to someone whose brain is fried from too much myspace.

Meh. I get 2 (or 10) points, the kids get a homework answer.
If they don't study, they fail the tests.
If they study, and use Homework Help sparingly, they'll turn out OK.
