SAme as with plane tickets, often one ways are ussualy as much if not more then roundtrips...

They do it because they know that people on one way fares are less flexible and will end up paying a higher fare. Often times people on one way fare are traveling for buisness, or moving, or some other acvitivity where they may be willing to pay more.

Its just basic supply/demand type pricing. It is the way train and airlines have always been, and always will be.

That isn't necessarily true.

On the news just last night was a consumer watchdog comparison that showed by buying 2 singles instead of 1 return (or even by buying 4 part-journey singles) you could save as much as £200 depending on the journey. For example instead of buying a return from London to Penzance at £220, but singles from London to Bristol, Bristol to Penzance, Penzance to Bristol and Bristol to London for £46. It's crazy but true!

Another instance when singles can be cheaper is if you are travelling at peak times. Saver Returns are not available during peak times, but something called Standard Leisure Advance is available for singles during peak times and can save you loads.

Be sure to book as far in advance as possible. If you buy singles for part-journeys make sure the split point (i.e. Bristol in the example above) is a station where the train actually stops.

It's always worth checking.

I travel with Arriva Trains Wales and their prices work out like this... The fare difference depends on the time of day you travel

A single fare to say Pontypridd is £1.70 anytime of the day regardless (named Standard Day Single) because you are going one way

A Standard Return (train gets into Cardiff before 9.30am) can be used anytime of the day... and would cost £2.70 to Pontypridd

A Cheap Day Return has restrictions on it, you cant travel home on trains arriving at cardiff before 9.30am and departing cardiif between 4.30 and 6.00pm due to them being peak times but only costs £2.10 to Pontypridd

So, if the other operators follow suit then it depends on the time of day you travel, its their way of making more money out of commuters
