Most jewelry cleaners are made of ammonia. Try that. A small jar of jewelry is less than $2.00 and includes a brush.

Take an old pill bottle & fill it half-full with regular ol' rubbing alcohol. Place the ring inside shake the bottle a few times, then set it aside for about 20 minutes; letting the dirt particles settle to the bottom of the bottle. Rinse the ring off with COOL water & you will be amazed how well your ring shines.
Might want to place it on your finger to rinse it so it doesn't fall down the drain.

Homemade Jewelry Cleaner
Ingredients:
1 glass jar or bowl
1 cup hot water (heating water in microwave for a minute or two is hot enough)
1 tablespoon baking soda
1 tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon dish washing liquid (Joy, Dawn, etc.)
1 piece aluminum foil (big enough to fit on the bottom of jar or bowl - shiney side up)
1 plastic spoon
1 towel
Instructions: Place aluminum foil in bottom of jar or bowl. Heat water and pour into jar or bowl. Add baking soda and salt to water and dish washing liquid. Stir slightly. Place jewelry on top of foil and let sit for 5 to 10 minutes. Remove jewelry with plastic spoon and rinse in cool water. Dry jewelry on a towel thoroughly.
Polish with something like Flitz (non - skin irritating polish comes in liquid or cream) to keep jewelry from tarnishing for up to 6 months. This works well for gold, brass, german (nickle) silver, and sterling silver. Can be used to clean jewelry with freshwater pearls, shell cameos and mother of pearl with no problem. Works just like the product called "Silver Magic" only cheaper.

Toothpaste works, and its quick too. Rub on, rinse off. You can use a toothbrush if you like. You're sure to find it in your home I think :D

Windex or the cheaper off-brand. We were told this by our jeweler, who made the ring.
