I am thinking of sponsoring a child in Africa. Does anyone here sponsor a child and do you get any contact with them through mail?

I had a good experience with one company, and a bad experience with another. It depends A LOT on which organization you go through. Some have higher "profit percentages" than others.

I never got communication from the child, but a friend of mine got a letter from the mother once.

If you want the names of the organizations, email me. I don't want to libel anyone or advertise by posting.

Our class sponsored a child.

I agree with LisaT. You really need to research the organization before committing. It's a great way to make a big impact with a little money.

We sponsor through World vision- you get letters, pictures and updates about the child's progress. You can write letters at any time and for birthdays and holidays World Vision sends you a nice card with stickers that you sign and send back with your donation and they send it to the child. They also do this for back to school and send the child school supplies.

I have to tell you that there's something really weird about these organizations and for the most part it's a futile effort that is motivated by self-righteous religiousity, in my opinion.

People are tempted to feel wonderful and uplifted; however, I would not feel right about it, but rather suckered in if I did it. Notice that they're always trying to make you feel guilty if you don't do what they say, as though you would be heartless. I wouldn't fall for it.

It is a great idea and i'll love to do it too. But as the others said, watch out for the organization and make sure this org doesnt make too much profit on your donation.

Yes and it is worth it, children are a blessing from God and heritage. You can have content on the email but Postal address is the best and sometime too physical content. Good thought.

Ophra does it and does lots of work in Africa. You know what they say about Ophra...if SHE does it, it must be good. I'd write her web-site and get info. She just opened up a school for girls over in Africa. Ophra.com.
