I'm only going to have about 20 people at my wedding. I want to have a cake but most bakers are telling me that they make cakes for 30+. I'd like to save some money, too. The idea of a sheet cake or cupcakes makes me shudder. Any good ideas?

I'm sorry you're going through this. Getting my wedding cake was such a hassle, too. I really hated my vendor but had to use them because of where we were having our reception.

Perhaps if you don't go in requesting a "wedding cake" you'll get better cooperation from the bakers in your area. They hear those words and get stuck in a rut: "these are our wedding cake options and this is what they cost -- no deviations."

I had 14 people at my wedding. I ordered a small two-tier stacked cake and it worked out great. The top layer was a 6" round (chocolate) and the larger layer was an 8" round (white). I think we were charged for 20 people. We didn't get to choose the exact flavors and fillings that we wanted because the cake was so small, but as long as you stick with the basics, you should be fine. They did decorate it exactly how we wanted.

The web sites below have photos that you could bring with you to a bakery to demonstrate:

A real popular trend is to have 'satillite' cakes. That is, to make each table a cake of it's own and decorate it w/ fresh flowers as to make it a center piece. Your own cake can be made of decorated baker's fakes. I use these for small weddings especially to help cut the cost for the cakes. They are WAY less expensive and WAY easier to deliver and set up, but LOOK exactly like cake (because they are decorated with frosting)

I really like the all-cupcake idea for both the bridal and groom's cake. Easy to serve, no cutting involved, and a perfect portion for everyone. I admit, I'm a big cupcake fan, so I'm a bit biased, but I love how simple and fun cupcakes are. They add a touch of whimsy which I think would suit your laid-back outdoor wedding. They can be decorated like mini cakes, adding silver non-pareils for a glamorous touch, or using sugared or fresh edible flowers for a fresh look. For the groom's cupcakes, if the cupcakes are chocolate, you could add a little chocolate covered espresso bean on each one as a simple, tasty flourish.

I made my own wedding cake you can buy the pans and have some one in your family make it or look in the local paper and see if there is a ad for some one who makes cakes out of there own home my friend did that for years and years and she was really good at it they were professionally looking but she just did it like a hobby until one day she got tired of doing it and also you could check at the local craft store they give lessons to ppl made there is some one in the family who has always wanted to learn this profession that could do it for you any one who is creative already could take lessons and learn it ....it is very easy if you are talented it is not for every one but it is for those who are talented! I made my own cake for 20 ppl .

Don't know where you live but at our local "small chain" grocery store they have a bake shop and they make some large layer cakes. Like 12" circles vs. 9". If you have them go to 3 layers this would likely be plenty for 20 people.

Go to the bakery department at your local grocery store. They are usually able to make smaller cakes for different occasions. I've seen some that are so tiny and might serve 3 - 4 people.

Since you dont like the idea of cupcakes you probably wont like this either, but rent a three tierd cake stand and layer Krispy Creme donuts on it then bake a small top piece for you and the groom to cut.

When my wife and I got married, we were on an almost zero budget.

She baked the cake herself, round one, three layers, tiered of course. It was small, but fit the bill. Also together we made all the little marzipan flowers, and iced it.
Also we went out and picked out our own little statues for the top. Those can be anything YOU like, after all .....it's a day for the two of you!

If nothing else works, get the cake for 30 people, and accept that you'll just have some left over. The extra cost can't be THAT much, can it?

This may sound, I dunno, stupid, but why don't you make it yourself?

Go to a book store and look at some recipe books for wedding cakes, see if it's something you think you could pull off, and do it!!

Just think, it'll be exactly as you want it to be!! Also, you could make a "test" cake beforehand, just to make sure it's the way you want it to look and taste.
