Norton Internet Security is one of the worst programs on the planet which is MUCH different then Norton Anti-Virus.

Norton Anti-Virus is a good program but many times users get it with their laptop or desktops and don't know that it's only good for 3-6 months and then you have to upgrade to continue the service.
I use freeav from Freeav.com it seems to work best and then add Windows Defender and use the firewall built in the XP service pack 2.

Freeav deals with malware and scumware also so you will be protected there.

The person who told you that just plain lied to you. While I do not currently use nortons (pc came installed with another) nortons is without a doubt one of the best. Symantics has been around for a very long time & did not win all the awards it has for being the "worst you can get". You can waste money & buy another (which will be equal to nortons) or download a free version like AVG but you will not have a better antivirus software, only a different one.

LOL on a side note, take advice about people saying free ones with a grain of salt, they have it cuz it is free & do not wish to pay for one. I had AVG & sent my gf a virus (which AVG missed on its scan, but she caught it with nortons on her end).

I have and always will use Norton. I am running 25 computers 3 servers and all have Norton on them. I have not once had a virus that Norton has not stop it in its tracks. I had tried Mcafee for a short time and lost a server to a virus! Never again! PS to all those out there looking for a good free virus software program......remember one thing you get what you pay for, its that simple.

Good advice that, from Feeman and Yoi.
We were using Norton but experienced a number of compatibility problems with AOL and switched to the McAfee anti-virus which AOL offered (they didn't mention that it was an un-supported old version). That was no better. We have had the free download version of AVG installed for a year now and it's excellent. No funny problems accessing different email accounts, no problems with virus infections - all identified and cleaned - and the interface is good too.
No, I'm not getting commission from AVG.

Hello,
The first answer was correct. AVG is very good for a free virus protector right now. If you don't know how to uninstall norton properly, you could leave files behind that will interfer with things. It's best to get someone who knows how to properly do the delete and install of AVG. Men seem to know some of these things better then women do, at least that's in my case with my husband.
Best of luck
God bless

Just a point about AVG to those that think it inferior because it is free...AVG for commercial use you pay for - that's how they make money to keep up the development and are able to give away for free the personal edition (which has exactly the same virus detection engine). I have used AVG on my PCs for 8 years and have installed it for all my friends and family (30 or so PCs), I've also installed the commercial version on over 300 machines, in all that time on all those machines I have not once known it to let anybody down.

The best I have found is the Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite. It includes Firewall, Anti Virus, Anti Spyware and Program Control. You have to pay a small amount for it but its worth it.

i could might desire to declare Webroot Anti-Virus with Anti-spyware is the terrific, plus you get 2GB of loose online storage. It does not placed a heavy load on the equipment components and it has in no way permit me down. while you're finding for some thing it is loose I even have pronounced Avast to numerous human beings & they seem to like it.
