While junk food may be tasty, it has no real nutritional value ... in other words, it has a lot of calories for no reason that your body needs.

There are a lot of tasty and healthy foods out there, unfortunately, they also cost more than junk food. For a lot of people, I think that is the true problem.

There are many reasons.

Too much sugar in things like chocolate bars, candy and pop can increase your risk of getting type 2 diabetes.

Too much fat causes your arteries to clog, increases your blood pressure, can increase you bad (LDL) cholesterol and can increase your risk of premature death due to cancer, heart disease, stroke and many others.

Also by eating too much junk food, most of which has no nutritional value, you are depriving your body of essential vitamins and minerals. This can lead to deficiencies and diseases like scurvy.

Your best bet to live a long and healthy life is to increase consumption of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Eat balanced meals that include a variety of food from the food guide.

Almost all junk food contains two of the worst things on the planet for you: (1) Trans fats, which are partially or fully hydrogenated oils, and (2) High fructose corn syrup. Trans fats make you gain weight and wreak havoc with your cholesterol levels, and high fructose corn syrup does the same things. The added disaster of high fructose corn syrup is that it can lead to adult-onset diabetes if you consume too much of it.

Because they supply very little nutritive value. They supply mainly calories, salt, degraded fats, etc. and their consumption will appease your appetite, making it less likely that you will consume wholesome food.
