I'm pretty sure that to travel back and forth between Canada and the USA, you don't even need a passport.

You'll need a visa, certainly if you go in by land.
The visa waver scheme (under which UK citizens don't need a visa to enter the States) only applies when flying in - possibly only from the UK.
