Viruses and spyware/adware are two different things.
Viruses are codes that replicate themselves from computer to computer by way of shared floppy or CD disc, email attachments, or network file sharing.
Spywares are programs that you download from the Internet and install on your computer. Often they are hidden inside a program that you want (those are called Trojans) so that when you install that neat new chat program, you also install a program that causes pop up ads or steals information bout you and sent it to the creator of the spyware.
You have to have separate programs for cleaning viruses and spyware. Norton offers its Internet Security programs which runs both at the same time.
For viruses:
Download and run AVG virus scanner from http://free.grisoft.com/softw/70free/setup/avg71free_405a782.exe for free
For Spyware:
Run both Ad-aware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/) and Skybot (http://www.safer-networking.org/) to remove any spyware. Run both as one may caught something the other missing. Then go to microsoft.com and download Defender to protect against future infections.
All of the programs are free

Symantec offets an all-in-one product that addresses anti-virus and antispyware.
CA offers "related" products that work together in their Internet Security Suite Product for: firewall, antivirus, antispyware, and antispam.
In addition, there are a number of free anti-virus products on the Net too. Check out www.freebyte.com for a list.
