Cryptography mainly handles the three major aspects
1) Authenticity
2)Confidentiality
3)Integrity

The "PASSWORD" concept is related to the Authentication.

Authentication::> Authentication is the process of determining whether someone or something is, in fact, who or what it is declared to be. In private and public computer networks (including the Internet), authentication is commonly done through the use of logon passwords. Knowledge of the password is assumed to guarantee that the user is authentic.

There are so many cryptographic techniques to protect passwords:
1) Salt
2)SKEY
3)Public key base techniques.
4)SKID

Some other non-crypto techs also can be applied to don this, like
1) Choosing un-common password.
These all are done to get rid of the common attacks:
1) Dictionary attack or rainbow table.

If you search google using any key word from here, you will get a lot of results and concepts.
Feel free to cont.
