Hi Angela!

This is a common problem. Weight loss after babies is the same as weight loss for anyone else. Thus, watching your calories and staying active is all you really need to do to have it come off.

I would suggest you stay at 1500 calories per day, trying to eat five meals of about 300 calories each. Count everything. If you can't count it, you can't eat it.

Don't finish the baby's food either. This is another reason people get hung up on losing the baby weight.

Regarding workouts, you really don't need to do them if you keep your calories at this level. However, they will speed up the weight loss. Better is do stay active by doing something you enjoy like shopping, playing with your kid(s), walking the dog, etc.

I believe this answers your question, but if not, you may email me.

Good luck on your diet and fitness goals!

Listen: you need to do 200 minutes of cardio a week. Remember fat does not turn into muscle, so you need to lose your fat while putting on muscle. The 45 minute thing is not true, but don't over 60 minutes at a time.

Do 5-10 minutes of cardio to warm up, then do your weight training. Do 30 to 60 minutes more of cardio, then go home.

The best time to eat is just after your workout within an hour when your metabolism is raging. For your muscles, incorporate some isolated soy protein or whey protein. Whey is more potent but the soy tastes better!

Don't look at your scale as the be all and end all, but get a measuring tape to check your progress, and that will show more tangible results.

Good luck and stick at it.

Is there another problem? If you're feeling any of the following, you should consider getting help:

Feeling restless or irritable
Feeling sad, hopeless, and overwhelmed
Crying a lot
Having no energy or motivation
Eating too little or too much
Sleeping too little or too much
Trouble focusing, remembering, or making decisions
Feeling worthless and guilty
Loss of interest or pleasure in activities
Withdrawal from friends and family
Having headaches, chest pains, heart palpitations (the heart beating fast and feeling like it is skipping beats), or hyperventilation (fast and shallow breathing)

These are good suggestions for anyone who just had a baby:

Try to get as much rest as you can. Try to nap when the baby naps.
Stop putting pressure on yourself to do everything. Do as much as you can and leave the rest!
Ask for help with household chores and nighttime feedings. Ask your husband or partner to bring the baby to you so you can breastfeed. If you can, have a friend, family member, or professional support person help you in the home for part of the day.
Talk to your husband, partner, family, and friends about how you are feeling.
Do not spend a lot of time alone. Get dressed and leave the house. Run an errand or take a short walk.
Spend time alone with your husband or partner.
Talk with other mothers, so you can learn from their experiences.
Join a support group for women with depression. Call a local hotline or look in your telephone book for information and services.
Don’t make any major life changes during pregnancy. Major changes can cause unneeded stress. Sometimes big changes cannot be avoided. When that happens, try to arrange support and help in your new situation ahead of time.

My baby is 11 years old and I STILL can't lose the inches, even though I'm back to normal on the scales. I go to the gym 3 times a week, but if you can't do that, put the baby in a stroller and walk for half an hour 3 or 4 times a week. You'll both enjoy it and you'll see a difference! God bless!

It took nine to put that weight on. Be patient with yourself and stick with it. Isolate the muscles in your problem areas though and get plenty of cardio. Don't starve yourself either because your last 20 pounds will still be there as you are burning muscle tissue.

Go on a low carb diet but not an extreme one -- you won't stick with it. The South Beach diet is a nice happy medium.
