It originated near Hamburg, Germany. Nomadic people traveled and ate something that was actually first more like Steak Tar Tar (raw) but then there were so many diseases that they added heat to it and it became the hamburger. Food Network is probably your best source for this information, I am just giving you what I remember from the show they did.

that's a nice question, well, since i thought about it couple of years ago, i didn't find an answer, but i never said a hamburger again, it's either a beef burger, or a chicken burger that i order anyway...
