I am a single 23-year-old female from Japan. My parent got remarried to an American, and she and other members of family (18 and below) are going to apply for the visa this fall. Because I am old, it will take an extra procedure to acquire a family visa. Does anyone know how long it would take?

I just started mine after marrying an American. The first is the 1-130 form. Its a petition to have a family/spouse stay in the US. It has to be approved or denied. They say wait 4 to 8 weeks for a response. I'm still waititng it's been about 6 weeks.

It will take a while, but not very long, because you are consider 1st preference on the chain.... you can not compare yourself to some married to a US citizen, like someone else who answered, b/c that is more of an automatic situation as long as there is nothing else in their case that cases delays.... i am married to a us citizen and it took 9 months.... it could take shorter or longer for you.... i heard it is shorter when you apply from those embassies in foreign countries, i don't know how true it is.... but I am attaching a link of what the uscis says about the process... also their processing times in the USA... you could check with your embassy to get an approximate time.... but various things can change your length of time... so it is only an approximate time...

# First Preference: Unmarried, adult sons and daughters of U.S. citizens. Adult means 21 years of age or older.
# Second Preference: Spouses of lawful permanent residents, their unmarried children (under twenty-one), and the unmarried sons and daughters of lawful permanent residents.
# Third Preference: Married sons and daughters of U.S. citizens.
# Fourth Preference: Brothers and sisters of adult U.S. citizens.
