I recommend Ubuntu for beginners. The lastest version is a combination install CD and Live CD, so you can boot your computer from the CD and check out Ubuntu without making any changes to your system. If you like it and decide to install it permanently, just click the "Install Linux" icon on your Ubuntu desktop.

Keep in mind that Linux is not nearly as user-friendly as either Windows or the Mac OS. I'd play around with the Live CD for a few days before deciding that's what you want.

As well as being less prone to viruses, you will find that Linux requires far less in the way of computer resource, compared to windoze. This means that you can use a very basic PC configuration (including very old machines) to do the same things as a Windows environment that would demand a much higher specification machine. On the flip side, you will find that Linux can lag behind Windoze when it comes to support for new peripherals.

There are equivalents for most of the microshaft tools such as office available on Linux.

Linux is less user friendly than windoze, but this is improving all the time with GUI based system management tools.

Knoppix (based on Debian Linux) can also be run from a CD, so you can try it out before going for a full-blown install.

Also bear in mind that while you are experimenting you can implement a dual-boot machine, which can be booted into Linux or Windoze based on user selection when you switch it on.

I think for just starting out, you should try Fedora core, or Suse.

If you are a programmer, linux comes with everything you need to start working.
If you are a gamer, I do not know.

I think that linux is pretty good, but having not used it before, it may be a steep learning curve. If you have used Unix systems before you will not have trouble.

Good thing about linux, if you do have a problem, it seems that someone has already found the answers for you... (searching google really helps)

Good luck
