It would be less likely for you to blow up the engine when you forgot to switch gear.... Also less likely for you to suddenly stop your engine because of an incorrect manual shift.

Automatic transmissions are easier to learn to drive. They require less coordination (left foot stays put and righ hand stays on the wheel). Automatic transmissions also require less routine maintenance. There is an argument that they are safer since they allow the driver to remain focused on steering with both hands, and either braking or accelerating. Personally I think they allow me to drink from a cup and not bother with shifting (just kidding).

Manual transmissions do have a POTENTIAL fuel savings if you operate them correctly. If you tend to have too much fun and get moving faster, which a manual transmission can do, then you quickly eat up any fuel savings. Automatic transmission suffer from a certain amount of slip (that's how they operate) which translates to energy loss. Modern automatics are much better, many rival manual transmissions. Manual transmissions do require you to be engaged in the operation of the vehicle at all times, which could make them safer (automatics let you zone-out behind the wheel). Manual transmissions are also considered a true drivers vehicle. You have more control and can have more fun. The wear on clutches and other linkages requires more maintenance, especially if you have too much fun. The transmission itself will last forever though. When automatics die they must be rebuilt and/or replaced which is big bucks on some cars nowadays.

you don't need to shift so you make less effort and don't move your legs, which in traffic, can be quite useful.

of course driving an automatic is about zero fun compared to a manual but that is another question isn't it?

this being said Audi have developed a gearbox called "DSG" which is basically a manual gearbox that can behave like an auto, or be switched manuall, and on top of that it is very quick because whenever a gear is engaged, the next gear is already ready to be used. That gearbox is also available on some VW models.

Sorry didn't mean to be advertising here - not sure it's even allowed?

High density roads stop and go traffic automatic leave in gear and creep along. Manual transmission Wear out the clutch move 10 feet push in the clutch take out of gear let out the clutch in neutral about that time traffic starts up and push in clutch put in gear slip clutch creep up 15 foot push in clutch hold clutch in wearing the throw out bearing repeat 900 times. Get the idea I love my 6 speed manual but traffic accidents and rush hour can give your left leg a work out.

I preffer manual gear!

Automatic are easier to drive but don´t last too long, you can´t control everything on them, and you can´t get really fast in a short time, as you can with the manual ones, that is if you know how to.

there is no advantage to it really, other than it is easy to learn. with a manual you get better gas milage, and more control over the vehicle, when you learn how to drive it properly. thats one reason my mack trucks are all manual

There isn't. It is easier for uncoordinated people to drive, but it costs more to fix, you can't control shifting and therefore maintain a little control over fuel consumption.
